Is strength training appropriate for older adults?

Should I continue to lift weights as I age?

The short answer is yes, absolutely!

Although the amount of weight or type of exercise may change with age, it is important to continue with strength training throughout the life span.

We start to lose muscle mass in our later decades of life, and therefore the best way to maintain strength is to continue some form of resistance training.

Research shows that we lose power (the ability to general force quickly) even faster than pure strength, and that a loss of power is correlated with increased fall risk.

Improving our dynamic balance is another way to minimize fall risk, and regular loading of our bones helps to combat the process of osteoporosis.

Here is a sneak peak of an exercise program with one of my clients. She has stayed consistent with a walking program and pilates 2-3x per week in addition to strength training with me for several years now.

She reports improved energy, confidence and overall mood since incorporating a more regular exercise routine into her life.

Get moving and stay moving for improved quality of life at any age!
