I lift upper body and I stretch so why does my shoulder still hurt?
When treating the shoulder you have to think about how the rest of the body works to facilitate stability at the shoulder.
For example, when you hit a volleyball, throw a baseball or swing a tennis racket your trunk and hips must rotate to create power and assist the shoulder.
When creating rehabilitation exercises you have to keep this in mind.
For example, you can tweak a standard middle and lower trap “Ys and Ts” strengthening exercise by having the athlete perform the upper body movement unilaterally while moving into a SL RDL on the opposite side.
During this combined movement we are working on scapular stability with simultaneous trunk and hip rotation in single limb which requires core control and dynamic stability.
Much like sport, integrated movements like the one described above require strength, stability and movement coordination of the entire kinetic chain.
